OpenSea Brings Back Solana NFT Trading Four Years After Its Exit

OpenSea has added Solana NFT trading to its marketplace, four years after its first attempt at supporting the chain stalled out. The relaunch went live August 31, 2026, and opened with five collections, including Claynosaurz, Mad Lads, BoDoggos, Collector Crypt, and Phygitals.

OpenSea's history with Solana is short and uneven. The company ran a Solana NFT beta starting in April 2022 that topped out at 165 collections and never built real trading volume, and it quietly shut that support down. Solana came back to OS2 in April 2025, but only for fungible token trading and swaps. NFTs stayed off the platform until now.

OpenSea CEO Devin Finzer framed the move as part of a broader push to make OS2 chain-agnostic rather than Ethereum-first.

"OpenSea should be the home for everything you collect, no matter which chain it lives on."

— Devin Finzer, CEO, OpenSea

Solana is the first non-EVM chain OpenSea has supported for NFT trading since the 2022 beta ended, alongside the dozens of EVM chains OS2 already covers.

Who Took the Solana NFT Market While OpenSea Was Out

Magic Eden and Tensor both launched Solana-native marketplaces during OpenSea's four-year absence and became the default venues for trading Solana NFTs, capturing the volume OpenSea's beta never managed to hold onto.

Magic Eden has since expanded and then narrowed its focus. It shut down its Bitcoin and EVM marketplaces earlier in 2026 to concentrate on Solana, the opposite direction from OpenSea's multichain strategy. Tensor remains active as a Solana-specific marketplace as well. OpenSea's return puts it back in direct competition with two platforms that spent four years building the audience and liquidity it walked away from.

OpenSea isn't the first outside marketplace to make this move. Rarible relaunched its own Solana NFT marketplace on August 6, 2026, opening with Claynosaurz before adding Mad Lads and other collections days later, less than a month before OpenSea's own return.

The Solana NFT Market OpenSea Is Returning To

NFT marketplace volume across the industry has fallen sharply from its 2021-2022 peak, when monthly trading ran into the billions of dollars. Volume now runs in the low hundreds of millions, and NFTs are competing for capital against DeFi, memecoins, prediction markets, and tokenized real-world assets. Several marketplaces have shut down entirely, including Binance NFT in June 2026, along with Nifty Gateway, Kraken NFT, and X2Y2.

Solana's broader network activity tells a different story. The chain processed 4.2 billion transactions in July 2026 and generated roughly 9,200 SOL in daily network fees, up 80% over three months. OpenSea is re-entering Solana NFTs at a moment when the NFT category is shrinking industry-wide but the chain underneath it is seeing rising activity from everything else running on it.

What This Means for Solana NFT Traders

OpenSea's return means Solana collections now show up alongside Ethereum, Base, Polygon, and other chains. Whether that convenience pulls meaningful volume away from the Solana-native marketplaces will depend on how many collections OpenSea adds, and whether it can build the liquidity its 2022 beta never found, in a market that's shrinking industry-wide.
